Remember When Counting Crows Were Big...?

Way back in 1993 there was a song on the radio that sounded different from the rest and heralded the arrival of a new sound. It wasn't Nirvana or Pearl Jam or Soundgarden, each of whom went on to enjoy massive amounts of fame and glory, some crumbling under all the weight. It was a little outfit called Counting Crows and the song was Mr. Jones. In the video a chubby guy bounces up and down in a faux San Francisco apartment and sings about Dylan:

The Counting Crows followed that single with the uber-depressing Round Here. That bizarre video has a lady walking around with a suitcase and a guy sitting in a Persistence of Memory-ripping-off desert scene with a raccoon head placed for maximum effect:

Strangely, this one-two punch rocketed the Counting Crows to a kind of mini-stardom, tour dates, over 20 million albums sold, sleeping with Jennifer Aniston and most recently a song on the Shrek soundtrack. Now this little band that was some sort of anomaly on the pop landscape is in a holding pattern while lead singer Adam Duritz deals with underlying mental problems that were apparent in his lyrics and glorified during the Counting Crows unlikely rise to fame.
